In the sidelines of the Business for Peace in Sudan Conference, organized by the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), convened in Addis Ababa on Feb. 27th thru -29th, 2024; a group of Sudanese Civil Society Organizations working in the fight against corruption met to discuss ways and means to develop joint action; and agreed to form the Sudanese Anti-Corruption Alliance (ACT-Sudan).
Following stance analysis as regards the current situation, we found ourselves facing a real challenge, as Sudan is incorporated within the top ten list of the world’s most corrupt countries occupying 162nd position as per the Transparency International report for the year 2023. Sudan is one of the countries rich in terms of plethora of resources. However, totalitarian regimes whose rule exceeded five decades have been causing the, displacement, immigration, misery and death to millions of Sudanese people; led to the country’s split; fueling strife, feuds and tribal conflicts; and loot of resources from territory to livestock to oil, and eventually gold. As an inevitable consequence of this great corruption and abject failure to manage diversity, the war of April 15, 2023 erupted as a culmination of the struggle over power, wealth, impunity and the continued plundering of the country’s resources. Now that this war ongoing almost for one year, it is estimated that thousands have died, more than 6 million have been displaced, and nearly 2 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries; not to mention rape, possession of illegal weapons, looting, the collapse of health facilities and educational institutions, communications outages, and food insecurity.
